Interesting facts about Sikkim, India

  1. The capital of Sikkim is Gangtok.
  2. The main languages in Sikkim are Briutia, Lepecha and Nepalese.
  3. The area of Sikkim is approximately 7299 sq km.
  4. There are about 540,500 people living in Sikkim.
  5. The world’s third highest mountain, Mount Kanchenjunga, is found in Sikkim. It has a height of about 8,586m!
  6. The most widely accepted origin of the name Sikkim is that it is a combination of two words in the Limbu Su, which means “new”, and Khyim, which means “palace” or house, in reference to the palace built by the state’s first ruler, Phuntsok Namgyal.
  7. Sikkim has many hot springs known for medicinal and therapeutic values. The most important hot springs are at Phurchachu(Reshi), Yumthang, Borang, Ralang, Taram-chu and Yumey Samdong.
  8. In Sikkim, it is common to hear Western rock music being played in homes and in restaurants even in the countryside.
  9. In Sikkim, literacy is 69.68%, which breaks down into 76.73% for males and 61.46% for females.
